I began martial arts training in the art of Jiu Jitsu in 1989 whilst undertaking my undergraduate degree at Sheffield University. In 1992, I began my PhD at Leicester University. Here, I completed my instructor qualifications and became instructor of the club in 1993. I was the instructor in residence at the University club until 2003 when I moved to Northamptonshire, passing the club to one of mysensei black belt students.

Whilst instructing at Leicester University I also founded 2 more successful clubs in Leicester and Loughborough (all three clubs are still thriving). While living in Northamptonshire I have founded the Cambridge Jiu Jitsu club and been closely involved with one of my students in the founding of the Anglia Ruskin University club. I currently reside in Exeter were I am an associate lecturer at Exeter College and teach martial arts classes in local schools, Exeter College, Exeter University and have a thriving adults and childrens cit  y class.

I founded Elite Martial Arts as a way to teach my accumulated knowledge. This is a rapidly growing organisation and in the UK we now have now 12+ adult clubs with over 300+ members (training in the Seishin Mizu Ryu style) and 3 childrens clubs with over 50 children utilising our unique Lionheart childrens programme.

Teaching Achievements

Fully qualified jiu jitsu instructor for 13 years. I have taught 12 students to black belt and 25 to brown belt. My students have won numerous gold medals at a national level. Two of my students have made the British Jiu Jitsu squad and represented Great Britain.

The Little Lions instructor is Dr Helen Catterick, a local GP, a first degree black belt in Jiu Jitsu and has been training in unarmed combat for just under 10yrs.Helen holds a level 2 coaching certificate with Sport England via the BJJAGB (the national governing body for Jiu Jitsu in Britain).Helen has taught self defence and unarmed combat across the country and has represented Great Britain in the martial art of Jiu Jitsu.
